An audit should reduce uncertainty and improve the next decision. If it only produces a longer task list, it has missed the point.
Start with the business signal
Before opening a ranking tool, define the outcome that needs to change. More calls? Better-fit leads? Greater Maps discovery in a priority area? Stronger performance at weak locations?
Audit five connected layers
- Discovery: where the business appears across priority searches and market zones.
- Relevance: whether profiles and pages clearly represent the services customers want.
- Authority: reviews, local mentions, links, expertise, and brand signals.
- Conversion: whether the result, profile, and landing experience make action easy.
- Measurement: whether calls, forms, bookings, and location actions connect to meaningful sources.
Force the findings into priorities
Separate immediate blockers, high-upside opportunities, compounding assets, and low-value distractions. Choose the smallest number of actions that could materially change the business signal.
